The north portal of the Blisworth Tunnel had clearly had a spruce up for the reopening ceremony in 1984. This followed its closure for four years for extensive engineering works.
Now covered in moss, weeds and generally looking shabby its appearance doesn’t befit the entrance to the 3rd longest navigable tunnel in England and reputedly the 9th longest navigable tunnel in the world.
Blisworth Canal Partnership would like to see the North Portal looking its best again. Could we take this project on?
We’ve started talking to British Waterways to see if it is possible.
December 2011
Some members of our team have now met with Dennis Maney, Heritage Officer for British Waterways and he has given us the benefit of his expert advice on the precautions to take when removing vegetation from brickwork and using lime rich mortar. Training on heritage and lime mortar training could be arranged through BW and it is something that we would invest in before undertaking such a task.
Next steps:-
Discuss all of the pros and cons of us undertaking the cleaning and re-pointing further with British Waterways.
