Candle Bridge got its name from the lady who according to local folklore used to spend her days sitting on a small wharf selling candles for boaters to use in the tunnel.
Once under the bridge the towpath is accompanied by a mainly rural backdrop. The walk to Blisworth Arm is incorporated into the Blisworth Heritage Walks leaflet. This was created by the Blisworth Heritage Society and is available at the village shop, Blisworth Tunnel Boats at Mill Wharf or by contacting the Heritage Society secretary on 01604 858146.
Blisworth held two Village Needs Days in October 2009 where the Canal Partnership was launched to village residents and its ideas shared.
Recognising that the towpath along this stretch gets very quaggy during the winter months (see photos) and is very hard to walk along, the idea of setting a hard path along it was suggested to the audience.
The proposal met with overwhelming support from villagers!
So far:
· British Waterways have drawn up some plans that include how the path should be constructed;
· Blisworth villagers have asked for benches to be put along that stretch;
· The Partnership has learnt that South Northants Council wants to promote countryside trails for a variety of users including walkers, joggers and cyclists and the path is likely to get their backing;
· There has also been a suggestion that fitness trail equipment could be sited along the side of the towpath;
Exciting stuff!
The next step is for Blisworth Canal Partnership to set out a vision for the towpath between Candle Bridge and Blisworth Arm to share with British Waterways. If you have any ideas – let us have them.
